Hayate no Gotoku” or “Hayate the Combat Butler”, done by Kenjiro Hata-sensei and serialized in the Weekly Shounen Sunday magazine is a recent but not as well known series.

The premise of the story is about poor Hayate Ayasaki(15) whose useless excuses of a parents sold him to the Yakuza to pay off their debt of ¥150 million. Desperate he tries to kidnap a young girl for ransom but fails too due to his kind-heartedness. But Lady Luck smiles on him as the girl, Nagi Sanzenin (13), is actually from a really rich family( I stress the “really” part) and pays off his debt in exchange for Hayate’s services as her butler.

But one little twist happens, which is Nagi misinterprets Hayate’s kidnap attempt as a love confession. However, both of them keep on misunderstanding each other, resulting in a ticking time bomb that grows with every passing chapter ^_^;;;.

Character Info(click on the name for the translated character profile from the tankoubans)

Hayate Ayasaki

The main character of the manga. Has really useless parents who likes to gamble and eventually sells him to the Yakuza to settle their ¥150 million debt. Has a very strong body due to having to support himself since the age of 9 by working in various part-time jobs. Despite the circumstances, he is very kind and polite. I really like him a lot :).

Nagi Sanzenin

The only daughter of the filthy rich Sanzenin family. She’s an otaku (yay!) and even draws her own manga. Very stoic, stubborn and can be very harsh at times. Even so, she’s still kinda innocent, in her own way ^^, and very kind. She misinterprets Hayate’s kidnapping attempt as a love confession, prompting her to help him and take Hayate in as her butler(or pet, as they put it ^_^;;)

Maria

The maid of the Sanzenin household. She’s the ‘normal’ one in the manga and the only one who knows about the truth of Hayate’s ‘confession’ but doesn’t dare to tell her ojou-sama. She’s smart, beautiful, polite and in all ways, a perfect maid ^^. But she can turn very very dangerous at times ^_^;;..Hayate has a crush on her.

There’s also other characters, including a tiger -_-;;, but I’ll leave it for self-discovery.

At first glance, this series kinda resembles He is My Master, with the butlers and rich families. But still, it is a much much more superior series, compared to HiMM’s sorry excuse for meido fanservice. The manga is relatively clean, marking a fresh change from the fanservice-laden series’ recently. I guess maybe that’s why I’m reading it, heh.

But still, Hata-sensei makes the characters moĆ© enough, especially Nagi, which somehow kinda feels like a bit of Naru(attitudes) and Asuna(looks) combined, but still unique enough from both characters. Hayate also is very very likable as a main character, due to the author being influenced by classics such as “A Dog of Flanders”, being extremely polite and kind despite the hardships he endures. A good example would be his ‘kidnappping’ of Nagi which ends up with him saving her from kidnappers(real ones) instead.

One interesting thing to note is, the author himself is actually in debt and his manga sales are crucial to him. One really fanatic fan of him actually bought 15 of the 1st tankouban, 25 of the 2nd tankouban and 35 of the 3rd tankouban, despite being unemployed ^_^;;. Read more about it at the Tsunami Channel’s Hayate page, which was what exactly made me interested in Hayate.
